Laser hair removal uses concentrated light that is absorbed by pigment in the hair. The energy reaches the follicle and damages its ability to produce new hair. Because hairs grow in different phases, several sessions are needed. A course often consists of six to ten treatments, usually spaced six to eight weeks apart, although the exact plan varies by area and individual response.

The treatment generally works best on darker hair because it contains more pigment. Results are long-lasting, but hormonal changes and other factors can cause new hair growth later. Maintenance treatments may therefore be useful.
