Who is a TCA peel suitable for?

The treatment may suit adults who want to refine and even the skin. A TCA peel can be used on the face, neck, décolleté and hands. Suitability, strength and skin preparation are determined during an assessment.

Treatment indications

A TCA peel can help improve fine lines, enlarged pores, sun damage, pigmentation and a dull complexion. It may be a suitable option for people who want to refine skin texture and reduce visible signs of ageing.

How does a TCA chemical peel work?

We first cleanse and prepare the skin. Trichloroacetic acid is then applied at a strength and depth selected for your skin. Redness and tightness can occur for several days, followed by peeling. Fresh skin gradually becomes visible as the treated surface cells shed. Recovery varies with the depth of treatment.

When is treatment not suitable?

A TCA peel is not recommended during pregnancy, with active infection, poor wound healing or a tendency to keloid scarring. You may also need to wait after waxing, depilatory creams or isotretinoin (Roaccutane). Always discuss medicines and recent treatments during your consultation.

Aftercare and advice

Protect the skin carefully from UV exposure after the peel. Use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every day and keep the skin moisturised. Avoid other peels, scrubs and intensive treatments for up to two weeks after your final peel, or longer if advised.

What should you avoid?

  • Do not cleanse the treated skin for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid jewellery rubbing against the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Minimise sun exposure and always use SPF 50+.
  • Avoid saunas, sunbeds and intensive exercise for the period advised, which may be up to two weeks.
  • If possible, avoid make-up for the first 48 hours.
