Upper Eyelid Correction at F&A Medical Center
An upper eyelid correction, also known as blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle tissue are removed from the upper eyelids. This treatment can reduce a tired appearance and may relieve functional symptoms when excess skin obstructs the field of vision.
Why Choose an Upper Eyelid Correction?
During upper eyelid surgery, excess skin above the eyes is removed. This may create a fresher appearance and improve the field of vision when the skin causes an obstruction. True eyelid ptosis is a different condition and may require a separate or additional treatment; this is assessed during the consultation.
The Procedure
Our clinicians select the technique after examining your eyelids and medical situation. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. A precise incision is made in the eyelid crease, after which excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue are removed. The incision is carefully sutured and covered with a small dressing. After the procedure, you will receive a cooling mask to reduce swelling at home.
Aftercare and Recovery
Cooling
Cool your eyelids during the first three days for ten minutes every hour using the provided cooling mask or frozen peas. Avoid direct contact between the cooling pack and your skin by using gauze.
Rest
Limit your activities and avoid strenuous physical effort to promote recovery.
Sleeping
Sleep on your back during the first weeks to prevent pressure on the incision sites. A neck pillow may be helpful.
Avoid Pressure-Increasing Activities
Avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, and sports during the first two weeks after the procedure.
Wound Care
Keep your face dry while showering and avoid applying makeup or sunscreen to the scars during the first two weeks. Use scar cream only after the wound has closed sufficiently and according to your clinician’s individual advice; faster healing cannot be guaranteed.
Sunlight
Protect the scars from direct sunlight with sunglasses and, once your clinician says it is safe, a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Contact Lenses
Do not use contact lenses during the first two weeks. Glasses are allowed.
Medication
Never stop or change aspirin, ibuprofen, anticoagulants or another prescribed medicine on your own. Discuss every medicine, vitamin and supplement with your clinician before surgery and follow the individual instructions you receive.
Cleaning
Gently clean the area around your eyes with a slightly damp cotton swab, without wetting the dressings.
Risks and Results
Swelling, bruising, tenderness, watery or dry eyes and temporary blurred vision from ointment are common during early recovery. Less common problems include bleeding, infection, noticeable scarring, asymmetry, under- or overcorrection, difficulty closing the eyes and persistent dryness. Results can be long-lasting, but ageing continues and a perfect or lifelong result cannot be guaranteed.
Contact your clinician or emergency care immediately if you develop sudden reduced vision, double vision, severe or rapidly worsening pain, rapidly increasing swelling, a bulging eye or heavy bleeding.
Insurance Coverage
Upper eyelid surgery performed only for cosmetic reasons is generally not covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Strict conditions apply when treatment is medically necessary, and prior authorisation may be required. Your current policy and your insurer’s assessment are decisive.
