Acne: causes, treatment and prevention

Acne is a common skin condition, particularly during puberty. It develops when sebaceous glands and hair follicles become blocked and inflamed, most often on the face, back and chest. Acne often improves by the age of 25, but it can persist longer or begin in adulthood.

Causes of acne

Acne mainly develops when excess sebum and dead skin cells block the follicles, often under the influence of hormonal changes. Heredity can play a role, as can hormonal fluctuations, certain cosmetics and some medicines. Diet, hygiene and stress are not direct causes, although individual triggers may influence symptoms.

Treatments

Acne can be persistent and requires consistent care. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition:

Mild acne

Mild acne is often treated with creams or lotions containing benzoyl peroxide or retinoids. These products help prevent blocked pores and support skin renewal.

Moderate acne

If topical treatments are not effective enough, a doctor may add an antibiotic in a cream or tablet form.

Severe acne

For severe acne, a dermatologist may prescribe a course of isotretinoin. This medicine can reduce sebum production effectively, but it may cause serious side effects and therefore requires regular medical monitoring.

Prevention

To reduce acne, cleanse the skin gently and avoid squeezing spots. Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and avoid oily cosmetics. Seek medical advice promptly for severe acne to reduce the risk of scarring.
