Upper Eyelid Correction at F&A Medical Center
An upper eyelid correction, also known as blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle tissue are removed from the upper eyelids. This treatment can reduce a tired appearance and alleviate issues such as tension headaches or impaired vision.
Why Choose an Upper Eyelid Correction?
During an upper eyelid correction, the excess skin above the eyelids is removed, often resulting in a fresher appearance and improved field of vision. This procedure is the most common type of eyelid surgery and can be combined with the correction of droopy eyelids (ptosis) for optimal results.
The Procedure
Our experienced cosmetic physicians use various techniques to achieve the best outcome. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. A precise incision is made in the eyelid crease, after which excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue are removed. The incision is carefully sutured and covered with a small dressing. After the procedure, you will receive a cooling mask to reduce swelling at home.
Aftercare and Recovery
Cooling
Cool your eyelids during the first three days for ten minutes every hour using the provided cooling mask or frozen peas. Avoid direct contact between the cooling pack and your skin by using gauze.
Rest
Limit your activities and avoid strenuous physical effort to promote recovery.
Sleeping
Sleep on your back during the first weeks to prevent pressure on the incision sites. A neck pillow may be helpful.
Avoid Pressure-Increasing Activities
Avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, and sports during the first two weeks after the procedure.
Wound Care
Keep your face dry while showering and avoid applying makeup or sunscreen to the scars during the first two weeks. After the stitches are removed, you may begin using our scar cream to support healing.
Sunlight
Protect your scars from direct sunlight by wearing sunglasses and using SPF 20 sunscreen.
Contact Lenses
Do not use contact lenses during the first two weeks. Glasses are allowed.
Medication
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen during the week before and after the procedure unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Paracetamol is permitted.
Cleaning
Gently clean the area around your eyes with a slightly damp cotton swab, without wetting the dressings.
Risks and Results
As with any surgical procedure, complications such as bleeding or infection may occur. Swelling and temporary blurry vision are also possible. The results of an upper eyelid correction are generally long-lasting, but natural aging may eventually lead to new excess skin. A secondary procedure can be performed when needed.
